Know before you go

Driving here is easy — once you know three things.

Antigua rewards drivers who explore. A few local details catch visitors out, so we handle what we can and tell you the rest straight.

  1. 01

    You need a local permit

A foreign licence alone is not legal to drive on in Antigua. Every visiting driver needs a temporary local permit — about US$20, valid three months. Bring your home licence and we issue it at pickup.

  2. 02

    Traffic keeps left

Antigua drives on the left, like the UK. Roundabouts give way to traffic already on them. Every car carries a windscreen reminder, and the first ten minutes are the only awkward ones.

  3. 03

    Roads have character

Main roads are well kept but often unmarked, and potholes and unsigned speed bumps appear without warning. Keep to 40mph, 20mph through villages — and yes, occasionally you wait for a donkey.
